Signs Your Child Needs an Eye Exam

Children rely on their vision to learn, play, read, and explore the world around them. But because vision changes can happen gradually, many children do not realize they are having trouble seeing clearly.

A pediatric eye exam can identify vision concerns early and help your child get the support they need to see comfortably at school, at home, and during activities.

Squinting or trouble seeing far away

Does your child squint to see the TV, move closer to the screen, or have trouble reading signs from a distance? These can be common signs of myopia, also known as nearsightedness.

Myopia often begins during childhood and may progress as a child grows. If your child’s prescription seems to change often, ask their eye doctor whether myopia management may be right for them. Myopia management focuses on slowing the progression of nearsightedness, not just correcting blurry distance vision.

Headaches or tired eyes

Frequent headaches, eye rubbing, or complaints of tired eyes may mean your child is working harder than they should to focus. These symptoms can be especially noticeable after reading, completing homework, or spending time on a computer or tablet.

While occasional tiredness can happen, regular symptoms are worth discussing with an eye doctor. An exam can help determine whether your child needs vision correction or has another concern affecting visual comfort.

Holding books or devices too close

Children sometimes hold books, phones, or tablets close to their faces because it helps them see more clearly. They may also lose their place while reading, avoid reading, or have difficulty concentrating on close-up tasks.

These habits do not always mean there is a vision problem, but they are a good reason to schedule an eye exam. Your child’s eye doctor can assess how well their eyes focus and work together at different distances.

Trouble at school or during activities

Vision problems can show up in ways that are easy to mistake for distraction or lack of interest. A child who cannot see the board clearly, struggles to follow along in class, or avoids detailed schoolwork may be dealing with an undetected vision issue.

Clear vision also matters beyond the classroom. If your child has trouble tracking a ball, seems less confident during sports, or complains that things look blurry, an eye exam can help identify what is going on.

Your child’s glasses no longer seem to work

If your child wears glasses but is still squinting, moving closer to screens, or complaining about blurry vision, their prescription may need to be updated. Frames that are loose, uncomfortable, or constantly slipping can also keep glasses from working as well as they should.

After an exam, our team can help your child find eyeglasses that fit comfortably, stay in place, and match their daily routine. For children who are ready for them, contact lenses may also be an option.

Schedule a pediatric eye exam

Regular eye exams give your child’s eyes the attention they need as they grow. If you have noticed any changes in your child’s vision, comfort, schoolwork, or behavior, do not wait for the problem to become more noticeable.

We provide pediatric eye exams for families at our Picayune and Pearl River locations. Schedule an appointment to help your child see clearly and feel confident every day.
